[sane-devel] persistent usb device for scanimage

ubuntu 14.04,
sane 2.0.14-9,
sane-utils 1.0.23-3ubuntu3.1,
hp scanjet 5590 desktop scanner.

the usb device number for a hp sj5590 is not persistent over reboots or
sleep mode. is there a way to build a udev rule that will make an
assignment that is persistent and is usable with scanimage?

for example, i built a rule that made the symlink /dev/sj5590 which points
to /dev/bus/002/005. but it seems scanimage cannot use this type of
symlink.

any suggestions?
